Gold Coast Greyhound Racing Club

In Southport the Greyhound Racing Clubs has always occupied the same complex. Initially they were at Queen Street Southport, but today both racing track is at Parklands Gold Coast a natural amphitheater 8km north of Surfers Paradise.

During the development of racing under the Racing Minister at that time, Russ Hinze considered that patrons should be given comfort and amenities at racing clubs.

Peter Crawford, Chief Executive Officer then set out to develop Parklands Gold Coast into one of the world's most unique complexes for Greyhound racing, with facilities for up to 5,000 people.

To the west, a 615-metre Greyhound circuit is located on a loam surface. One of the reasons contributing to these outstanding records was that the track was on of the first computer designed racing tracks in the world.

"To assist in the research of the Greyhound track, some Greyhounds were actually wired at the University of Sydney to see what angles were the most suitable before too much pressure was applied to the tendons whilst racing.

"When these results were fed into a computer, the existing track wads then designed. And today it is still the only track in the world which has been designed in that manner".

The Greyhound track itself is a similar design to a velodrome, undulating slightly to assist maximum speed of the Greyhounds at all times.

The on-course stabling is designed in such a way that a mezzanine section actually houses the kennel block for the Greyhounds so it has been possible to have dual Harness/Greyhound race meetings, with each race being approximately 20 minutes apart.

The G.C.G.R.C. conduct their race meetings every Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon starting from 3:00pm.

Once you arrive at the entrance at Parklands Gold Coast you are fully under cover and in air-conditioned comfort. The facilities in the punters' auditorium open at mid-day on race days providing up-to-date racing information.

The lounge area offers snack bar with a variety of light meals. As well there is a main lounge restaurant, which overlooks the racing track. This is fully air-conditioned and is very popular during the hot humidity of Queensland's summers.
